The university offered me incredible support and encouragement throughout my time here, allowing me to balance motherhood and my studies. Thanks to the help of lecturers and classmates, I am delighted to have achieved my degree..Debbie Palmer | Abertay University | BSc (Hons) Psychology and Counselling
Before starting her degree, Debbie worked as a dental nurse. When the pandemic struck, she was furloughed, and during the first week of lockdown, she also discovered she was pregnant with her first child Unable to return to her nursing role due to restrictions, this became a pivotal moment for her. Determined to pursue her passion for counselling, Debbie decided to apply to Abertay University.
Just as I started my studies, I welcomed my son into the world. Despite sleepless nights and the demands of studying, I knew that choosing Abertay was the right decision — a step toward improving my life and securing a brighter future for my children.
The university provided tailored support, including learning plans and making lectures and seminars available online, allowing Debbie to watch them around her caring responsibilities. Additionally, a dedicated space on campus was provided for expressing milk. Staff and lecturers offered ongoing encouragement, empowering Debbie to continue her studies confidently and work towards achieving her degree.
Balancing motherhood and studies, Debbie also welcomed her third son the following year. She vividly recalls moments of juggling her coursework with caring for her babies, even during video calls with her supervisor, and with her husband’s support. Throughout it all, she built a close-knit group of friends on the course, bonded through shared experiences and the counselling coursework.
Her dissertation focused on faith and resilience — topics close to her heart, especially as a Christian.
Debbie’s journey didn’t end with her degree. Inspired by her experiences, she is now applying for an MSc in Child Development at Abertay, with the goal of making a meaningful difference in children’s lives. Recognising the urgent need for mental health support, especially given the long CAMHS waiting lists, she is motivated to contribute to this vital area.
Debbie also volunteers regularly with Samaritans, driven by her strong belief in giving back. She credits the support and encouragement she received from her university community as a life-changing factor in her journey, inspiring her to make a positive impact on others.
