It’s not all about grades – it’s the soft skills you develop along the way. Put yourself out there, and watch your confidence grow.Jamie McLeod | Abertay University | LLB (Hons) Law
If anyone can vouch for the power of extra-curricular opportunities, it’s Jamie McLeod.
Jamie’s university journey took some unexpected turns. After initially moving north to study law at a different institution, he encountered the typical challenges of adjusting to a new environment away from friends and family. Recognizing the need to pause and reflect, he made the decision to step back from his studies, leave the course temporarily, and return home to Dundee. This time allowed him to gain clarity, rebuild his confidence, and lay a stronger foundation for his future.
Refusing to give up on his ambitions, Jamie later applied to Abertay University to study Law. The smaller class sizes and the university’s supportive, close-knit community made the transition feel more manageable—and ultimately, made all the difference.
He quickly settled in at Abertay. A first-year module in personal injury law ignited his passion for the subject, giving him a renewed sense of purpose and direction for his legal career.
Jamie said:
My lecturers were always approachable and gave great advice on how to get ahead in the legal profession.
By his third year, Jamie was all-in. He became President of the Moot Club – a student-run society where participants take part in simulated court cases, arguing fictional legal scenarios in front of a panel. He also took on the role of Secretary of the Law Society. Both these two roles significantly boosted his confidence and skillset.
He said:
Both experiences were incredibly enriching. They helped build my confidence, sharpen my legal thinking, and gave me the chance to put my skills into practice in a supportive environment.
In his final year, Jamie took part in International Law Week in Belgium – a fully funded initiative by the Clark Foundation that brought together law students from across Europe and provided a fantastic opportunity to meet peers from different countries, share ideas and build a wider network.
Jamie’s growing confidence also led him to apply for a summer job with leading local law firm Thorntons. The experience allowed him to build connections within the firm – and ultimately helped him secure a prestigious traineeship, which he’ll begin after graduation.
I got really involved with the firm, met amazing people and built relationships that helped me land this amazing role. I can’t wait to get started and begin my career in law, specialising in personal injury.
